MANILA - The Philippine death toll and missing individuals from typhoon Haiyan (local name Yolanda) surged to over 4,700, a senior government official said Friday.
Eduardo del Rosario, executive director of the Philippines| National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), said on Friday evening that the number of individuals who perished climbed to 3,621 while those missing hit 1,140. There were 12,165 people who were reportedly injured.
The latest number of death toll was a huge jump from Friday morning|s figure of 2,360.
Malacanang, the presidential palace, earlier said that there was no attempt from the government to doctor or suppress the number of casualties from the super typhoon that wrought havoc in most parts of central Philippines.
Meanwhile, Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas said that government forces were able to stabilize typhoon-ravaged areas following reports of isolated looting and other crimes in central province of Leyte, considered as one of the hardest-hit provinces.
The Philippine National Police sent an additional 950 personnel to restore order in Tacloban City, Leyte while the Armed Forces of the Philippines also dispatched 1,100 soldiers to help, said Roxas, who has been in Leyte shortly after the typhoon struck central Philippines last Friday.
